The branch of Psychiatry has grown significantly in past 6-7 decades. The era of exorcism and black
magic and other unscientific therapies have been replaced by modern scientific methods of treating
mental disorders.
Department of Psychiatry at Chhattrapati Shivaji Subharti Hospital, Meerut, is the only exclusive
department for U.G./P.G. teaching with total staff strength of 24 people including five eminent
Psychiatrists and other Mental Health professionals for providing facilities to treat mental health
Problems in the region of Western U.P. and adjoining NCR. It is an exclusive department which also
provides medicolegal consultations to the patients of mental subnormality and other chronic mental
disabilities. We have been authorized by the CMOs of Meerut and Muzaffarnagar to provide Disability
Certificates for deficiency in subjects of various ages.
The General Psychiatry OPD entertains a good variety and rush of patients of various ages on a
daily basis, besides special OPDs running on each day which are:
• Child & Adolescent Psychiatry – Monday & Friday
• Geriatric Psychiatry – Wednesday
• Psychosexual Disorder Clinic – Thursday
• De-Addiction Clinic – Tuesday & Saturday
The Psychological services and Psychodiagnostic are imparted to various patients
throughout the week.

The Department of Psychiatry is recognized for P. G. Training in Psychiatry by MCI
and was allotted three seats for MD (Psychiatry) with effect form May 2010. And P.G.
Training got started accordingly with one candidate. Currently we have one 3rd year,
two 2nd year and two 1st year P.G. students of MD Psychiatry.
The Psychiatry Department also conducts Alcoholic Anonymous Meetings twice a week
(Wednesday & Saturday) along with Public Information Meetings once in a few months.
Recently, the department has also started Community Psychiatry Clinic once in a week
(Friday) at Multannagar Community Health Center, Meerut in collaboration with the Department
of Social & Preventive Medicine.
The inpatients’ facility consists of a 30 bedded unit with 12 Female & 18 Male beds.
The average occupancy in Psychiatry ward is quite good. The various procedures administered
to Psychiatry inpatients as a part of therapeutic intervention include:
• ECTs
• Electro sleep therapy
• Relaxation & others Exercises
• Narco Analysis
• Psychotherapeutic Intervention etc.
The inpatients’ unit also has a side Pathology Lab with the facility to carry out
the routing blood and urine investigations.
Besides all these activities the department of Psychiatry is also involved in teaching
M.B.B.S. students- both through didactic lectures and clinicals.
Training in psychiatry prepares the students to interview the patient, establish
rapport, elicit detailed psychiatric case history, conduct mental status assessment,
assessment of psychopathological symptoms & signs, diagnose and manage common psychiatric
disorders, follow principles of consultation-liaison psychiatry; and hence to deliver
preventive, promotive, creative & re-habilitative services for psychiatric patients-
both in family & in community. Emphasis is also laid upon handling psychiatric emergencies
and referring complications/unusual manifestations of common disorders & rare psychiatric
disorders to the specialist.
