Forensic Medicine is a branch of Medical Science which enables doctors-
-To practice medicine safely & gracefully
-To deal with various medicolegal situations efficiently by:
• Examination & preparation of report of medico legal cases
• Conduct & interpret findings of medico legal examination in relation to the cause
& time pass since death
-Manage diagnosis, treatment & medico legal implications of common poisons
The department of Forensic Medicine of Subharti Medical College has developed under
the dynamic & experience guidance of steel warts in the field, namely Dr. R.K. Sharma,
Retd. Prof. & Head, Forensic Medicine & Principal, Govt. Medical College, Muzaffarpur
& Director Medical Education, Bihar. The first Head of Department afterwards was
Dr. B.B.L. Agarwal, Retd Prof. & Head, Forensic Medicine, & Principal UCMS, Delhi,
also joined the departmental team.
We are also very lucky to have the blessings & encouragement of Dr. V.B. Sahai,
a very senior faculty & named in Forensic Medicine, Ex-Director, SIMS & present
Vice-Chancellor, Subharti University, Meerut, in the development of the department.
Apart from being the Head of the Department for a number of years in government
medical college Allahabad, he has also being Principal of three government Colleges
& Director General Medical Education, UP & hence his parent department here is on
strong foothold.
A perfect manual of undergraduate students is formulated by the Head of Department
& faculty members for giving practical orientation to the undergraduate students
in medico legal & post-mortem cases.

THE OBJECTIVES OF OUR DEPARTMENT ARE:

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Identify the basic medicolegal aspects of hospital and general practice.
2. Define the medicolegal responsibilities of general physician while rendering
community service either in a rural primary health centre or an urban health centre.
3. Appreciate the physician’s responsibilities in criminal matters and respect for
the codes of medical ethics.
4. Diagnose, manage and identify also legal aspects of common acute and chronic
poisonings.
5. Describe the medicolegal aspects and findings of post-mortem examination in case
of death due to common unnatural conditions & poisonings.
6. Detect occupational and environmental poisoning, prevention and epidemiology
of common poisoning and their legal aspects particularly pertaining to Workmen’s
Compensation Act.
7. Describe the general principles of analytical toxicology.
