Department of Microbiology is a perfect blend of Academic, Diagnostic & teaching activities. The faculties actively participate in teaching & corrective evaluation of both undergraduate & Post-graduate students through out the year, by means of Lectures, Practical demonstrations, tutorials & periodic evaluation of students. The department has a very strong clinical microbiological diagnostic set up actively monitored by the faculties in charge of each section. The faculties are also actively carrying out research activities in their respective fields of interest in Microbiology. Formally department was headed by four different heads who were renowned & famous Microbiologist of International repute. They are Professor Maheshwar Dayal Mathur, Professor Rajender Kumar, Late Professor K. Krishanraj, Professor (Mrs.) Sudha Rawat.

The department has 9 faculty members. The faculty members are experienced academicians with training in various excellent academic institutions from India. The faculty apart from imparting academic training to the undergraduate and post graduate students is also actively involved in high quality research activity.

In 2008 the MCI granted first batch of post graduate students to the department of microbiology by starting M.D. course. The other new courses started are M.Sc., Ph.D.(Medical Microbiology)
The department is actively involved organization of different academic activities such as seminars, CME, workshops. The department of microbiology with department of pathology organized U.P. chapter of Pathology & Microbiology in 2007. The department also organized a CME on hospital associated infections which was sponsored by ICMR, New Delhi. Various eminent speakers of national repute have visited the department for guest lectures to name a few Prof. S.C. Parija from JIPMER, Prof. J.C. Samantray from AIIMS and Prof Usha Baveja from MAMC.
COMPLEX

The department of microbiology has a fully functional ICTC for HIV counseling and testing. To mark the occasion of World AIDS Day the department carried out various activity in the college & hospital and also extended the services of ICTC to urban health centers. The students were encouraged to make posters; film & stage play on HIV awareness and prevention and were appropriately awarded.

In 2008, the department was allowed the permission for starting the PG degree course vide letter of permission no. 12012/231/2008-ME(P0II) from Ministry of Health and family welfare, Government of India, dated 31st March 2009.

The objectives of our department are:
At the end of course, the undergraduate MBBS student is well versed & able to:

1. State the infective micro-organisms of the human body and describe the host parasite relationship.
2. List pathogenic micro-organisms (bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi) and describe the pathogenic of the disease produced by them.
3. State or indicate the modes of transmission of pathogenic and opportunistic organisms and their sources, including insect vectors responsible for transmission of infection.
4. Describe the mechanisms of immunity to infections.
5. Acquire knowledge on suitable antimicrobial agents for treatment of infections and scope of immunotherapy and different vaccines available for prevention of communicable acquired infections.
6. Apply methods of disinfection and sterilization to control and prevent hospital and community acquired infections.
7. Recommended laboratory investigations regarding bacteriological examination of food, water, milk and air .
